Work for safeguarding Finland’s independence

The Defence Forces offers both military and civilian tasks to professionals in different fields. We have approximately 13,000 employees and about 1,000 job titles. We work in different parts of Finland on land, at sea, in the air, even underground and underwater.

Meaningful activities

Our mission is to safeguard Finland’s independence and citizens’ freedom and to defend Finland in all circumstances. Even as a NATO ally, our core task remains unchanged. We support other authorities, such as the police and rescue departments. We also participate in regional surveillance, the provision of international assistance and crisis management.

Development of competence and capabilities

We encourage our personnel to develop their skills by providing continuing training and supporting personnel in seeking new opportunities within the Finnish Defence Forces.

One of the key tasks of the Defence Forces is to develop our capabilities. Our research and development activities are multidisciplinary and extensive, ranging from defence doctrine and military research to functional capacity research and development of technical capabilities.
