Civilians in the Finnish Defence Forces

We have diverse civilian tasks for professionals in almost all fields of education, from space technology and aviation medicine to logistics and international procurement.

We employ approximately 4,500 civilians in various professional, expert and supervisory roles.

What is required of civilian employees?

  • Suitable training for the task
  • Finnish citizenship
  • General eligibility for public service

Civilian positions do not require completed military service or women’s voluntary military service.

Continuous development of vocational skills and competence

We encourage the civilian employees to develop their skills by providing continuing training and supporting personnel in seeking new opportunities within the Finnish Defence Forces.

Training, theses and seasonal work

We also offer civilian assignments to trainees and people working on their thesis. Our trainees work in, for example, user interface, software development, communications, legal and laboratory tasks. We also employ seasonal workers for some of our units.
