Jussi automates and streamlines work processes

Software Robotics Engineer Jussi Horttanainen works for the Information Management Services Unit at the Defence Forces Shared Services Centre. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (university of applied sciences).

His job is to automate routine tasks. They include financial administration processes, such as invoicing systems.

As a software engineer, he works in a multiprofessional team of five, which includes professionals with a background in technology or business studies.

– We have different personalities on our team, each with their own strengths and roles. We work together, support each other and have fun. If you encounter an insurmountable problem, you can always call another team member and ask for help. What’s more, we can use the consultants of our software suppliers.

Solutions to help our colleagues’ work

Jussi uses software robotics to create solutions for different units of the Finnish Defence Forces enabling more efficient, reliable and meaningful operations. Automating routine tasks makes work faster and reduces the number of mistakes, which enables specialists to focus on more demanding and challenging jobs.

– It is always nice to hear that what you do makes it easier for others to do their work.

In addition to work Jussi has, for example, learned about cloud technologies and received a lot of training provided both internally by the Finnish Defence Forces and by external actors. Years of working for the Finnish Defence Forces has brought new tasks and increased Jussi’s competence.

– I’d say that I have improved with work experience. All the time, there are new projects and tasks as well as new problems to solve. You have to learn, and keep learning, to find the smartest solutions.

Increasingly meaningful work

Other perks of the job include weekly exercise opportunities and flexible working hours, which make it easy to reconcile family life and work.

Jussi finds the job multifaceted. Working with different administrative units and branches gives him a good overview of the Finnish Defence Forces’ different processes. In addition, the work has become increasingly meaningful of late.

– For me, the importance of my work is thrown into sharp relief in the current state of world affairs. The motivation for training and operating in emergencies has also increased.
